This book gave me an interesting look at George Washington's life before, during and after the Revolutionary War. Much of the material appears to be taken from letters and diaries so there may be some exaggeration, but a lot of information about finances did have actual records to back it up. It gave a very interesting look at the private man It was well worth reading since much of what we know comes from some glowing accounts in history books as well as the failures during the earl part of the Revolution for those who have studied it in more detail. Thomas Fleming is an excellent writer and I just zoomed through this book. It heldmy attention late into the night. It provides a different angle on George Washingtonthan what many people know but without contradicting the better known outline. It doesstress what a volcanic temper Washington had which he successfully mastered to the benefitof himself and his new country. His mother is not a comfortable personality and he managedto show her respect and love without succumbing to her efforts to dominate.Quite a bit of attention is given to Sally Fairfax, the married woman that Washington fell in love with as a young man but again was able to keep her and her husband (and the whole extended family)as lifelong friends. You do sense that though Washington loved and admired his wife, Martha,the love was different from what he felt for Sally. There is not a hint of inappropriate behavior in the primary sources that Thomas Fleming used in dealing with Washington's love for Sally. The early years and his farming experience are fleshed out more than usual. The political and military aspects of the American Revolution are not dealt with in the detailed way I might have preferred but it was well done. I did want to see some attention to Benedict Arnold and George Washington but that was not featured. I highly recommend the book for anyone and especially for those who enjoy history.
