Although I am an avid reader of history and have read a few biographies of Washington, including Washington Irving's, I was not aware until recently that former Chief Justice John Marshall had written one. Marshall's biography is a contemporary account from someone who knew George Washington his entire life, had served under him during the Revolutionary War and had shared the hardships of Valley Forge and had become an articulate advocate for ratification of the Constitution. He was this nation's third Chief Justice and our greatest, establishing the independence of the judiciary and prerogrative of constituional review. So, he had a unique vantage point, as a soldier during the revolution, statesman and a champion of the new constitution and government. His account of Washington's life and the larger events of the time are written clearly and concisely. He was a Federalist and his account of Washington's years as president are from the point of view that a strong national government was essential for the preservation of the United States. This biography makes clear why George Washington will always be our greatest president.
